THE CASTLE OF TORNESE

These are pictures of the ruins of the Castle of Tornese, as they appear today. The castle was built by the Barons of Clermont in the early 13th Century as the seat of sovereignty of their fiefdom. At that time, the Barony was a part of the Latin Empire of Constantinople, one of the many Byzantine dynasties. This area of Greece later fell to the Turks in their conquest of the Byzantine Empire, which culminated in the capture of Constantinople in 1453. What was once the Barony of Clermont is now a part of the Greek republic. The Castle of Tornese, now a historic site, is located about 6km from Killini, on the coast of the Peleponnese.
