The Order of the Commonwealth is a private Order, established by the Barony of Clermont to promote the Declaration of Commonwealth Principles.
One of the most recently inaugurated Orders of Chivalry, that of the Order of the Commonwealth, was founded in 1987. It was founded by the Baron Douglas of Clermont (four years before his creation as Prince, St. Michel de Clermont) as a private expression of his admiration for the Declaration of Commonwealth Principles, promulgated at Singapore, on 22nd January, 1971.
In his capacity as Prince Grand Master of the Order, The Prince Douglas, has seen it grow in just a few short years far beyond the borders of the constituent parts of the Commonwealth of Nations. Local Priories of the Order have been commencing the establishment of charitable, educational and social activities.
Several members of Royal and Noble Houses have graciously accepted invitations to join the Ranks of the Order of the Commonwealth, whose Ranks are in fact open to all Aspirants of Good Character who accept the Declaration of Commonwealth Principles. These august personages are usually listed in the Circular which is furnished to all Members on a periodic basis.
The Order of the Commonwealth serves as an Institution recognising the very many diverse groups who support the traditional values of Chivalry.
