The Title of Honour of Viscount or Viscountess of the Barony of Clermont (founded in the thirteenth century during the Fourth Crusade) is now being offered to a select group of individuals...
DOUGLAS, Baron de Clermont of the Latin Empire of Constantinople and Prince St. Michel de Clermont, in keeping with a Crusader Tradition of some eight hundred years, offers to those of Noble Blood and/or holders of degrees of Knighthood, of good reputation and chivalrous manner, gentlemen or ladies, the Title of Honour of Viscount or Viscountess.
This ancient function has always assisted in the administration of the Baronies and is antiquely grounded in Crusader feudal Norman law, viz: "the Chairman of the Court of Burgesses' title was vicecomes-viscount... the function of the Viscount was that of governor of the city... the safety of the townspeople... was in his hands. He supervised the markets... he collected the lord's revenues... the Viscount had under his command the officials of the court and its administration... he was responsible for the peace and well-being of the city as a whole".
(The Crusaders' Kingdom,J. Prawer, NY 1972)
Altogether in the days of the Crusaders a most responsible position. Today, although the responsibilities of the office no longer have application, the Barony of Clermont wishes to acknowledge those who, out of respect and veneration for the ideals of Chivalry, wish to assume the Title of Honour of Viscount or Viscountess.
Style of address would be: The Rt. Hon. John (Mary) Smith, Viscount(ess) of Smithville.
Address in conversation: "My Lord" or "My Lady"
